VINFoundry

Terms of Use

VIN Foundry is free to use, needs no account, and is offered on the terms below. Using the site or the API means accepting them.

The service

Everything here is provided as is, without warranty of any kind, express or implied. There is no guarantee that it will be available, that it will be correct, or that it will keep working the way it does today. Rate limits exist to keep it available for everyone and may change without notice.

Generated VINs

Every VIN this site generates uses a genuine manufacturer prefix with a randomised serial. It is structurally valid and it decodes correctly, but it is not taken from any record of a real vehicle — nothing here is drawn from real-vehicle data.

Because that serial is random rather than sequential, a generated VIN could coincide with a real vehicle's by chance. That is unlikely, but it is not impossible, and it is a further reason never to treat a generated VIN as evidence about any vehicle.

You may use generated VINs for testing, fixtures, demos, screenshots, training material and benchmarks. You may not use one to represent a real vehicle's identifier — that includes titling, registration, insurance claims, vehicle listings, and VIN cloning. Doing so is fraud in every US jurisdiction, and no part of these terms should be read as permission to attempt it.

Decoded results

A decode describes what a VIN's pattern means according to NHTSA's VPIC database. It is not a statement about any particular vehicle's history, condition, ownership, title status or safety, and it is not a substitute for a title search, a history report or an inspection.

Licensing and credits

The open-source packages this site is built on carry their own licences, listed on the resources page. VPIC data is published by NHTSA and the NCIC code tables come from NIEM.
